The Future - revised proposals in 2008

Developer Deeley Freed is currently working on new proposals for the regeneration of St Mary-le-Port.

Extensive public consultation carried out in summer and autumn 2006 showed the majority of people – some 70 per cent – supported the idea of redeveloping the St Mary-le-Port area but were concerned about any significant loss of green space. Many also wanted to see more detail before they could support the proposals.

Deeley Freed has taken on board those concerns. In consultation with Bristol City Council, it has drawn up new proposals which minimise the loss of public space while still delivering a viable development and funding for improvements to the west end of Castle Park.

Those plans envisage the creation of a vibrant new quarter for the city which reclaims the historic heart of Bristol and reflects the area’s original medieval street patterns. With food-related shops, restaurants and cafes at its centre, the development would also provide new homes, offices and public spaces.

However, Castle Park and the St Mary-le-Port area are currently subject to a Town and Village Green application, which could fundamentally affect those proposals. Deeley Freed has therefore decided to wait until this application is determined, which is likely to be in early 2009, before it consults members of the public and key stakeholders on its new proposals for St Mary-le-Port.

Bristol City Council’s parks service is working with English Heritage on a new conservation management plan for Castle Park, which will be put out for public consultation once the Town and Village Green application has been determined. It is expected that the St Mary-le-Port regeneration will contribute funding for some of the key priority projects in the plan.

This is a vital development that will remove the eyesore blighting this important location, something the people of Bristol have rightly been demanding for many years.
Deeley Freed and Bristol City Council are committed to working together to find the right solution for St Mary-le-Port.
